iBasso Kunlun
The iBasso Kunlun is a high-end desktop headphone amplifier that uses advanced GaN technology. With eight GaN FETs, forty high-quality transistors, and a power output of up to 7400 mW per channel at 32 ohms, this amplifier delivers exceptional performance. With both single-ended and balanced inputs and outputs, a linear power supply, DC protection, a four-channel TI volume control, and a CNC-machined aluminum chassis, the Kunlun is designed for uncompromising sound quality and durability.
The name Kunlun is inspired by the mythological Kunlun Mountain, the abode of heavenly beings and a symbol of the supreme. In the same spirit, the iBasso Kunlun represents the relentless pursuit of ultimate sound quality. As a high-end desktop headphone amplifier, it combines groundbreaking amplification technology with a pioneering mindset in technological innovation and advancement.
As one of the first affordable desktop headphone amplifiers to use gallium nitride, the Kunlun marks an important step in the exploration of frontline technology. GaN FETs have significantly higher electron mobility than traditional MOSFETs and silicon transistors, resulting in higher switching speeds and lower conduction losses at high frequencies. In audio amplification, this translates to faster transient response, improved dynamics, and better control over the sound.
Thanks to the extremely low internal resistance of GaN technology, the Kunlun can deliver very high current. With an output impedance of only 0.12 ohms, it is capable of driving even low-impedance in-ear monitors with extreme precision. The result is a dynamic, layered sound image in which power and finesse go hand in hand, comparable to brute force deployed with extreme precision.
The internal construction consists of an impressive configuration of forty high-performance transistors. Eight power transistors in the output stage and extensive discrete control ensure an exceptionally high current capacity. Compared to traditional op-amp designs, this offers several times more headroom and dynamic reserve, resulting in a powerful yet refined and detailed sound character.
In balanced mode, the Kunlun delivers up to 7400 mW per channel at a load of 32 ohms. This power is more than enough to effortlessly drive even high-impedance, low-sensitivity headphones. The amplifier maintains a stable and richly layered sound image with impressive dynamics and spaciousness.
For the power supply, iBasso deliberately chose a high-quality linear power supply instead of a switching power supply. By using analog transformers and high-quality voltage regulators, an extremely stable and low-noise power supply is achieved. This contributes to a low noise floor and a natural, smooth reproduction of microdetails and textures, with an almost distortion-free analog sound.
The Kunlun is equipped with comprehensive DC protection that continuously monitors for abnormal DC components. As soon as a problem is detected, the output is immediately shut down to protect connected headphones. This provides extra security and peace of mind for demanding audiophiles.
No compromises were made in the choice of components. The amplifier uses eight high-quality GaN FETs and a large number of audiophile electrolytic and film capacitors. This careful selection guarantees a stable power supply, extremely low distortion, and a sound that is clean, warm, detailed, and compelling.
The volume control combines analog operation with digital precision. High-quality TI volume control chips ensure that the left and right channels remain perfectly balanced at any volume level, with smooth and accurate control. At the same time, the user retains the familiar feel of an analog potentiometer. A three-stage gain switch allows the gain to be adjusted to suit different headphones, effectively suppressing noise and distortion.
The design is completely plug-and-play and based on a pure analog signal path. No drivers or complex settings are required; just plug it in. The volume knob and gain switch offer solid, high-quality control, and every detail has been crafted to ensure an intuitive and reliable user experience.
The housing is made of CNC-milled aluminum and finished with an anodized coating for extra hardness and scratch resistance. The timeless, elegant design exudes luxury while providing excellent heat dissipation. Combined with the optimized internal layout, the amplifier remains stable and cool even under high loads, which benefits the sound quality.
In terms of connectivity, the Kunlun offers maximum flexibility. On the input side, there is an XLR balanced input, an RCA single-ended input, and a 4.4 mm balanced input. For the outputs, it has an XLR balanced output, a 6.35 mm single-ended output, and a 4.4 mm balanced output, so that virtually any headphones can be connected optimally.
Technically speaking, the Kunlun delivers impressive measurements. Via the balanced outputs, it offers a frequency range of 10 Hz to 40 kHz with a signal-to-noise ratio of 122 dB, a dynamic range of 123 dB, and a THD+N of up to -117 dB without load. The maximum output power is 7400 mW per channel at 32 ohms with an output voltage of up to 16 Vrms. Via the single-ended output, the frequency response remains equally wide, with an output power of up to 1900 mW per channel and an extremely low output impedance.
The amplifier has a solid build quality, weighing approximately 2380 grams for the device itself and approximately 3000 grams including packaging and accessories. Measuring 239 by 223 by 64 millimeters, the iBasso Kunlun is a robust yet elegant desktop amplifier that combines performance, technology, and aesthetics into one high-quality package.
