iBasso DC-Tonfa
The iBasso DC-Tonfa is a high-end USB DAC and headphone amplifier that incorporates a fully differential 8-channel discrete R2R architecture into an exceptionally compact housing. The combination of a 24-bit R2R DAC, high-quality components, and powerful analogue amplification makes the DC-Tonfa suitable for both IEMs and demanding headphones.
The R2R DAC is built using 312 high-precision metal film resistors and incorporates a hardware resistor compensation network with an additional 60 resistors. Combined with iBasso’s internally developed FPGA algorithms, resistor tolerances are continuously compensated. The fully differential 8-channel design is engineered to provide high linearity and low distortion while preserving the characteristic musical presentation of R2R technology.
For clocking, the DC-Tonfa uses two Accusilicon femtosecond oscillators. The DAC section is also powered by an ultra-low-noise LT3042 LDO with a noise level as low as 0.8 μV. This provides a stable and exceptionally quiet power supply environment for the R2R circuitry.
The integrated FPGA supports NOS mode as well as four digital filters developed by iBasso. This allows the sound signature to be adjusted according to personal preference. Settings such as digital filters, gain, and channel balance can be configured via the iBasso UAC app for Android or through the browser-based control panel for Windows and macOS.
The analogue amplification section is equally sophisticated. Equipped with two TI dual op-amps and four BUF634A buffers, the DC-Tonfa delivers up to 800 + 800 mW of power into 32 ohms through its 4.4mm balanced output. The 3.5mm single-ended output delivers up to 219 + 219 mW into 32 ohms. Thanks to its low output impedance and two gain settings, the DC-Tonfa can be used with a wide range of headphones and in-ear monitors.
Operation is handled via a multifunctional encoder and the built-in 0.96-inch OLED display. This allows functions such as volume control, settings, and digital filters to be adjusted directly on the device. Despite its powerful hardware, power consumption remains relatively low: in NOS mode, it draws less than 100 mA at 5 V with a 48 kHz sampling rate.
The DC-Tonfa supports PCM up to 32-bit/768 kHz and native DSD512. With UAC 2.0, it is compatible with devices and operating systems including iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux. UAC 1.0 also allows the DC-Tonfa to be used as an external USB sound card with devices such as the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. The 3.5mm connector can additionally be used as an S/PDIF output for digital signals up to PCM 768 kHz.
Weighing just 45 grams and measuring 61 × 34.6 × 15 mm, the iBasso DC-Tonfa is easy to take anywhere. It combines the sophisticated technology of a high-end R2R DAC and headphone amplifier with the compact size and flexibility of a portable dongle.
